II. Jesus: The Perfect Sacrifice. Chapters 8-10:1
A. New Covenant: Better Promises
B. The word Perfect in Hebrews
1. 2:10 “For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.”
2. 5:9 “And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obeyhim,”
3. 7:19 “(for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.”
4. 9:9 “(which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,
5. 9:11 “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation).”
6. 10:1 “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.”
7. 10:14 “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
8. 11:40 “since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.”
9. 12:23 “and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,”
10. 13:21 “equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that whichis pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

C. The Main Point of the Letter
1. Christians have a high priest who has brought full forgiveness of sins. This is evident by the fact of WHERE he is seated.
2. V4: Jesus was not even from the tribe of Levi.
3. V6: What better promise? TO make the worshipper PERFECT by the new covenant
a) V8-12 “For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel andwith the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the daywhen I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did notcontinue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. Forthis is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declaresthe Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I willbe their God, and they shall be my people.”

D. New Covenant: Better Sanctuary: 9:1-14
1. The earthly holy place, V1-10
a) V3b & 4: Golden altar of incense was not in the most holy place.
b) V8-10: The “way” to God was not yet “opened”
(1) Why? “According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered first.” V.G.B.
(2) But real only with food and drink and various washings regulations for the BODY imposed until the time of reformation.
c) Purification and Purify
(1) V13b: External (flesh)
(2) V14b: Inward (conscience)
(3) Purification in both instances is only by blood
(4) V14b: Being perfect is being FULLY PURIFIED the believers CONSCIENCE is the object of purification in the new covenant.
(a) FROM “dead works”
(5) How can this happen? V10:15 “…He is the mediator of a new covenant.”

E. New Covenant: Better Sacrifice: 9:15-28
9:26-28 “…But as it is, he has appeared ONCE and FOR ALL at the end of the ages toPUT AWAY SIN by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered ONCE to bear the sins ofmany, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to SAVE THOSE who are eagerlywaiting for him.”

F. New Covenant: Better Results: 10:1-18
1. 10:11 Contrast of STANDING with sitting
2. 10:10 A BODY prepared for sacrifice!
3. 10:14 Positional perfection, progressive perfection
